The reason you haven’t got the things you want, is you don’t want them.

Your want for those things isn’t a real want, not a burning unquenchable want, really, it’s just a wish.

It’s true. It doesn’t matter what your dream is, if you don’t want it, you are unlikely to have it.

Ok, are you talking about dreams or wants?

A dream starts with a want, or, sometimes, a dream leads to a want.

I think I can hear you you saying that those things, dreams and wants, lead to wishing?

Correct, wishing for the things you want.

And that’s a problem? Wishing is a problem? I sense you’re saying that – that wishing for what I want, wishing for my dream is actually a problem? How is that true??

Easy. A dream, or a want, one leads to the other…

Which leads to which?

Either, sometimes it starts with a want and leads to a dream, sometimes a dream leads to a want.

Ok, ok, but how can wishing for a dream, or a want, be a problem?

Because wishing isn’t enough. Not nearly enough. Everyone wishes for all kinds of things – they wish for a happier family, more money, a nicer home, it’s common to wish for those things, but it’s not common for people to get those things that they wish for.

Why though? That seems unfair, it’s why people say life is unfair.

But that’s not true, life is very fair. People get what they want.

But you said

Why?

Because wishing isn’t enough. To get what you want, you need to want it. I mean really want it. Wishing isn’t enough, not by a long shot.

This is about desire, right?

Right. Look how many men get the woman they want, but not the life they want.

Why is that?

With the woman, they go beyond wishing, their wish becomes a want, a burning desire, they make up their minds that they have to make that woman theirs, and realising they can’t demand she want them, they devise a plan. Not always a very organised one, but nonetheless a plan, and then they act on the plan – they ask her out, send her flowers, get her friends to influence her, whatever it takes, and often, no matter how long it takes.

Nothing is too much because their want is so strong it drives them. Their want demands from them a plan, and it demands they act on that plan – they know that if they don’t they won’t get the woman, and because their want is so strong, the idea of not having her is intolerable.

So, how come they get her, but they don’t get the life and all the other stuff they want? Normally their burning desire for the woman has all sorts of other dreams attached, the home, the future, the money?

Simple. Because their want for those other things is not nearly as strong, and so doubt creeps in and persuades them those things aren’t within their reach.

Yes, but doubt does the same thing when they want the woman, doesn’t it?

Yes, of course, but their want for her is so strong it defeats doubt. But not so for the beautiful home, riches, health and happiness. Their want for those things is really just a wish, not a burning want like they had for the woman.

If they really and truly wanted those things their want would begin to burn in them, they would realise they had to have those things, and, just as with the woman, realising that they couldn’t simply demand it, they would devise a plan, and act on it. They would stick at it for however long it took.

I’m feeling a bit inadequate. I’m not really sure how to want what I want, rather than wish for it.

Want it.

How do you mean, want it? How do I make my want strong enough, how do I make it real want and not just a wish?

Want it. WANT IT. Waaant it. Focus on wanting it. It’ll happen. Want it until, as far as you’re concerned, there’s no other option available. Until a life without that thing is no longer an option, until such an idea is unthinkable, then and only then has it become a want. Until that happens it’s just a wish and wishes aren’t strong enough to give you what you want.
