Changing the world, or ‘serving the house’. Where does your treasure lie?
God, I hear about people who get excited because they feel ‘the call of God on their lives’, but, well, I don’t feel anything like what they’re talking about, nothing to get excited about anyway. ‘The call of God on my life’ sounds very religious and boring, a churchy sort of thing, it sounds about as awful as having ‘a ministry’.
That sort of talk, ‘ministries’ and ‘calls’ is for people stuck in church. The people out there in the world have no idea what any of that even means. I don’t really either. It’s churchy talk, not me talk. Not the sort of stuff that makes me want to get up and get going. I hope you don’t mind?
Not at all.
And look, God, I know I’m not supposed to be selfish, not supposed to be thinking about me sorts of things, but all that talk about ‘serving the house’, well it leaves me cold. Sorry. I mean really?? When my generation signed up for this God-thing, back years ago, no one ever talked about ‘the house’, or serving it, it was all about ‘going out’, it certainly wasn’t about staying in. ‘A call of God on my life to serve the house’?? Good grief, that sounds, well frankly, sort of hideous. The cry to go out and change the world, now that’s my cup of tea. Hope you don’t mind.
Don’t mind at all. It’s what I’d prefer. There are more than enough people serving the house. It’s just the house after all, not the main game, not the reason anyone is born. Just as ‘homebodies’ never change the world, churchy homebodies don’t either. Home is a place to be born and raised and go out from. Not a place to stay. But whatever works for you. Just remember, the house was made for man, not man for the house.
What do you mean, ‘whatever works for me’?
I’m not pushing you to any end. If you want to hang around at home you’ll be the sort of person who hangs around at home. It has its benefits of course.
Benefits?
Home is warm and comfortable. Just remember though, it’s not where fortunes are made and most lives that get changed, don’t get changed at home.
I don’t want to be comfortable, comfortable sounds hideous too.
That’s what I’m saying. If you want to hang around in the house well that’s all well and good, but if you want to do something different than other men do, live a life that people remember, a life that changes other lives, then thinking about staying in the house won’t help you, you’ll need to be thinking about getting out there. You know what they say, ‘where your treasure is, there also will be your heart’ — changing the world or serving the house, where does your treasure lie?
